Travel to Malta

The main ECCNA 42 convention takes place in Valletta, Malta, 23–25 July 2027, with a pre-convention boat trip on Thursday 22 July. Most international visitors will arrive through Malta International Airport (MLA). The information below is a practical planning guide; flight schedules, fares and entry rules can change before July 2027.

Malta International Airport is the main international gateway to Malta. Airline schedules for summer 2027 are not final yet, so please check the airport’s airline information and your airline before booking.

Entry requirements

Malta is part of the Schengen area. EU nationals can travel with a valid passport or national identity card. Nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland also benefit from free-movement rules.

Visitors from outside the EU need a valid passport and may also need a visa, depending on nationality. For short stays in the Schengen area, the standard limit is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. For non-EU travellers, the passport should generally be valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the EU and must have been issued within the previous 10 years.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is already in operation for non-EU short-stay travellers. ETIAS is scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026, but the exact start date has not yet been confirmed. As ECCNA 42 takes place in July 2027, visa-exempt non-EU visitors should check the official ETIAS information before travelling.

From the airport to Valletta

Malta Public Transport currently operates Airport Direct route TD4 between Malta International Airport and Valletta. The service currently runs approximately every 30 minutes. Routes and timetables may change before 2027, so check the latest schedule before travelling.

Bus tickets can be purchased at the airport, from ticket machines, or onboard. Cash and contactless card payments are accepted. The official tallinja app is useful for live journey planning and current timetables.

Getting around Malta

Public buses serve Malta and Gozo, including Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s and other popular areas. Visitor travel cards are available, and single journeys can also be paid for onboard by cash or contactless card. We recommend checking the tallinja app for the latest routes and times.

Taxi from the airport

Official airport taxis are available 24 hours a day. Pre-paid taxi tickets at fixed rates can be purchased from the taxi booth in the Welcomers’ Hall after arrival. The Malta Taxi app is also available for bookings.
